Hannes Helmke

Hannes Helmke

After studying woodcarving, Hannes Helmke (born 1967) studied interior design for four semesters, as he was no longer able to identify with classical sculpture. Afterwards Helmke wanted to do an apprenticeship as an art teacher at the Alanus School of Art and Society in Alfter. There, however, he rediscovered to sculpture and opted for a postgraduate degree in free art, which he completed in the summer of 1998.

Since then Hannes Helmke has lived and worked as a freelance sculptor in Cologne. The summer months he spends on the island Spiekeroog; The originality and freedom found in everyday life, the experience of unspoilt nature are important sources of power and inspiration. All designs are created on Spiekeroog and are sculptured in bronze in Cologne.

About:

The artistic theme of Hannes Helmke is man and his point of view in the world. The body is an expression of ego-being and self-perception. In his choice of motifs, the artist does not start from an intellectual point of view, but works his sculptures out of their feelings. At the beginning of his artistic exploration were first large feet and elongated bodies and only then asked the question of: Why this form and no other? Helmke's original inspiration was the elongated evening shadows of the human figure. However, the resulting figures are not seen as shadow figures or spirits in the mystical sense, but as characters.
